Some trees are simply too big to fell - a hundred-foot cottonwood over a machine shed, an oak wider than your kitchen, a pine that towers over everything on the block. Dropping a tree like that whole isn't an option, and neither is guessing. This is the work our name is built on.
We bring the tree down from the top in controlled sections, using a spider lift or crane to reach the canopy and rigging to lower each piece where we want it - not where gravity wants it. The lift goes through gates and across lawns that a bucket truck can't touch, which is how the biggest removals happen in the tightest yards without wrecking what's underneath.
Every large removal starts with a free on-site estimate: we look at the tree, the targets around it, and the access, and give you a plan and a price before anything gets cut.

How a big removal actually happens
Every large removal starts with a plan made standing under the tree: what's below it, where the wood can land safely, what the access allows, and in what order the canopy comes apart. Then the tree comes down from the top - limbs first, then the trunk in sections - with each piece either dropped into a clear zone or lowered on rigging lines when there isn't one.
Sectional work is slower than felling and enormously safer. A hundred-foot tree that can't fall anywhere safely as one piece can come down in forty controlled pieces that each land exactly where they were sent. The wood gets bucked to movable lengths, staged, and hauled - or cut to firewood length and left, if you heat with wood.
The stump is quoted alongside the removal so there are no surprises: most people have us grind it the same visit.
Crane, spider lift, or climb
The spider lift covers most of Northeast Wisconsin's big trees: 'tracks through a standard gate, light enough for lawns, tall enough to work the crown of mature hardwoods. A crane earns its place on the true giants and on removals where wood must be lifted up and over a structure rather than lowered beside it. Climbing still has its uses on sound trees with good anchors - but dead or compromised wood gets the lift, full stop.
What affects the price
- Height and trunk diameter - more wood, more sections, more rigging cycles
- Targets underneath - open lawn is fast; a tree caged by house, garage, and fence is surgery
- Equipment access - gate width, slope, and distance from the street decide the method
- Wood disposal - full haul-away versus bucked-and-left firewood changes the truck time
- Stump grinding - quoted with the removal so you can decide once

Common questions
How big is 'too big' for you?
We haven't met it yet. Height and diameter change the method and the equipment, not whether it can be done - that's what sectional rigging and lift equipment are for. The biggest trees in Northeast Wisconsin - the century cottonwoods, the yard oaks wider than a doorway - are exactly the jobs the sectional method and lift equipment exist for. Size changes the plan and the day count, not the answer.
Will the equipment tear up my lawn?
The spider lift is designed for exactly this problem - it's light, tracks through a standard gate, and puts down far less pressure than a truck. Where ground protection mats help, we use them. The spider lift puts down less ground pressure than a riding mower thanks to its tracks, and plywood mats bridge the soft spots in shoulder season. By the following mow, most lawns show no sign we were there.
How long does a large removal take?
Most single-tree removals are done in a day, including cleanup. Genuinely huge or complicated trees can run longer - the estimate will say so up front. A typical mature yard tree is a one-day job including cleanup; a true giant over structures can run two. The estimate states the expected duration so you can plan around vehicles, pets, and gates.
Is the stump included?
Stump grinding is quoted alongside the removal so you can decide. Most people have us grind it in the same visit; some leave it. Your call, priced clearly either way. Grinding is always quoted as its own line so you're choosing, not guessing. Most owners grind the same visit - the equipment is already there, and a ground stump means the lawn heals in one season instead of hosting a monument.
What happens to all the wood?
Hauled away by default, brush chipped. If you heat with wood we can buck the trunk to firewood length and leave it - just say so at the estimate. Brush is chipped on site; log wood is hauled unless you want it. Firewood-length bucking is a common request and we're happy to leave a neat stack instead of taking the weight.
